Reproductive System Exam Flashcards
Asexual reproduction disadvantages (1)
No genetic diversity
Sexual reproduction advantages (3)
Genetic diversity
Allows for sperm to be delivered into the uterus
A good chance of sperm and ova mixing together
Sexual reproduction disadvantages (4)
Slower
Finding a mate
Person may not be fertile
Could contract a sexual disease
Function of the male reproductive system
To produce sperm and to ensure that some sperm fuse with the female ova
Testes
Sperm are produced in the seminiferous tubules of the testes which are contained in the scrotum (helps maintain lower temperature for sperm production)
Epididymis
Storage and maturation site for sperm
Vas deferens
Tubes that transport sperm from the epididymis to the urethra and seminal rich fluid is added here
Urethra
A tube that transports urine from the bladder and sperm from the vas deferens to the exterior
Penis
Contains erectile tissue that becomes engorged with blood to provide a means of directing sperm cells into the vagina during copulation
Ovary
Produces eggs (ova) and releases them into the oviduct
Oviduct
Eggs released from the ovary pass along the oviduct. Where egg is usually fertilised by sperm before passing into the uterus.
Uterus
Thick muscular organ lined with with blood vessels; where blastocyst embeds and develops into embryo and foetus during gestation period
Cervix
Opening of the uterus. Secreted mucus solution that provides a suitable environment for the sperm cells to move through to the oviduct
Vagina
Receives sperm cells and is also the canal through which the baby is born (unless a Caesarian occurs)
Asexual reproduction advantages (2)
Quicker
Don’t have to find a mate
