Bio AOS 2 Flashcards
Collaboration
the action of working with someone to produce something.
Intraspecific
produced, occurring, or existing within a species or between individuals of a single species.
Interspecific
existing or occurring between different species
Predator
An animal that actively seeks out other animals as it’s source of food
Prey
Living animal that is captured and eaten by a predator
Symbiosis
Prolonged association between different species in a community in which at least one partner benefits. Includes parsitism, mutualism and commensalism
Competition
interaction between animal or plant species, or individual organisms, that are attempting to gain a share of a limited environmental resource.
Parasitism
Relationship in which one organism benefits at the expense of its host
Mutualism
Both species benefit
Bioaccumulation
Refers to the increasing accumulation of a non-biodegradable substance in organisms at higher trophic levels in an ecosystem
Aquatic biome
Lakes, oceans, rocky shores
Terrestrial biomes
Rainforests, deserts, grassland
Biodiversity
A variety of living things such as plants, animals and micro-organisms
Habitat
Where an organism loves, feeds and reproduces at any given time
Population
The number of a species living in a particular area
Producers/autotrophs
Manufacture organic compounds such as glucose, from simple inorganic compounds, such as carbon dioxide and water using photosynthesis
Equation for photosynthesis
6CO2+ 12H20———> C6H12O6+6O2+6H20
Ecosystem
Habitat+Community
Community
Biological unit consisting of all the populations living in a specific area at a specific time
Carrying capacity
Stabilised size reached by a given population of a given habitat
Abundance
Number of individuals of a a given species per unit area
Environment
The external surroundings in which and organism lives in and are influenced by biotic and abiotic factors
Species
Taxonomic unit consisting or organisms capable of mating and producing viable and fertile offspring
Niche
The role of an organism in an environment
