Q

Ribosomes

A

Small organelles that are not enclosed by their own membrane. May be “free” in the cytoplasm or attached to the rough ER in eukaryotic cells. They are involved in assembling proteins.

Q

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)

A

ER is responsible for the production, processing, transport and storage of substances within the cell.
There are two types of ER (rough and smooth)

Q

Rough endoplasmic reticulum

A

Rough ER is located near the nucleus and has ribosomes associated with it for the manufacture of proteins. Ribosomes attached to rough ER are responsible for synthesis of proteins to be excreted by the cell

Q

Nucleus

A

Densely packed area of the nucleus containing both DNA and RNA.
The darkest region in the nucleus is called the nucleolus and is a dense/ solid structure made of nucleic acid and protein. The nucleolus is responsible for the formation of ribosomes
