Membrane Transport Exam Flashcards
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a partially permeable membrane
Partially permeable
Means that the membrane only allows certain substances to cross it
Active transport
Transport of molecules in/out if cells via proteins in the plasma membrane
Passive transport
Transport of molecules across the plasma membrane that does NOT require energy
Facilitated diffusion
Passive transport of a polar molecule (e.g. Water soluble molecule) in/out of a cell through transport proteins found in the plasma membrane. E.g. Amino acids, sugars, ions
Exocytosis
Bulk transport of large molecules or particles OUT of the cell
Endocytosis
Bulk transport of large molecules or particles INTO the cell
Pinocytosis
Endocytosis of FLUIDS into cells
Phagocytosis
Endocytosis of SOLIDS into cells
Diffusion
The gradual movement of particles from and area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
