UTI

A

Inflammation due to infection anywhere in the urinary tract, ranging from the distal urethra to the kidney.
* UTI in the kidney is called pyelonephritis; in the
bladder, cystitis; and in the urethra, urethritis.
* 80 to 90% of UTIs relate to uropathogenic Escherichia coli ( UPEC).

UTI: Signs and symptoms

A
  • Cystitis: Dysuria, frequent / urgent urination, foul smelling / cloudy urine, haematuria
  • Urethritis: Dysuria, discharge, itching penis
  • Pyelonephritis: Fever, chills, nausea, malaise, mild to extremely severe back/side pain, blood or pus in urine. May be accompanied by lower urinary tract symptoms. This is a red flag seek medical attention.

A
  • Simple sugars and refined carbohydrates:
  • Caffeine, diet soft drinks and alcohol.
  • Red meat, pork and poultry can act as reservoir for uropathogenic E. coli . Can also promote inflammation (arachidonic acid).
