What is stress urinary incontinence?
Involuntary loss of urine upon effort or physical exertion.
What is urgency urinary incontinence?
Involuntary loss of urine associated with urgency.
What is overactive bladder syndrome?
When urgency UI is accompanied by nocturia and increased frequency.
Should anything be ruled out prior to diagnosing overactive bladder syndrome?
Presence of a UTI
Which gender is most likely to suffer incontinence?
Females
Does caffeine cause urinary incontinence?
Yes, removal of this from the diet can resolve the issue.
What is said to be of increased urinary frequency?
Bladder emptying more than 7 times a day.
What causes stress UI?
Intravesical pressure being greater than urethral closing pressure.
What is usually responsible for an overactive bladder?
Idiopathic in nature.
May be neurogenic.
How does hydration level affect bladder symptoms?
Lack of hydration can worsen symptoms.
This is due to concentrated urine being more irritating to the bladder wall.
What are conservative managements of urinary incontinence?
Fluid management
Reduction of caffeine, fizzy drinks and alcohol intake
Weight management
Bladder retraining
What medication can be given to treat urinary incontinence?
Anticholinergics
What can multiple anticholinergic therapy cause?
Impaired cognitive function.
What medication should be avoided in cases of urinary incontinence?
Oral oestrogen
This can be given vaginally.
which muscle is paralysed in surgical intervention of UI?
Detrusor muscle.
