How does pelvic organ prolapse present?
Incontinence, with progression to retention as the condition worsens.
How does pelvic organ prolapse feel for the patient?
Like a ‘soft ball’ coming out of the vagina.
What is a cystocele?
A prolapse of the bladder.
What is an enterocele?
A prolapse of the bowel (usually the small bowel).
What is a rectocele?
A prolapse of the rectum.
How is prolapse treated?
Conservative management first (such as physiotherapy and lifestyle advice).
If unsuccessful, perform surgery.
Is physiotherapy an effective method of treatment for prolapse?
Yes, works in 70-80% of cases.
How is atrophic vaginitis treated?
Vaginal oestrogens
In which patients are pessaries indicated?
Those wishing to have more pregnancies
Those unfit for surgery
