Patient experiences irregular periods, with symptoms of the menopause present.

Patient is in period of time following the menopause.
What is the average age of menopause?
51 years old.
What age range is said to have premature ovarian insufficiency if they suffer menopause?
Under 40
Early menopause occurs between which ages?
40-44 years.
What are the key symptoms of menopause?
Mood swings
Night sweats
Hot flushes
A very variable condition.
Is menopause treated in regard to hormone levels?
No treatment chosen in respect to symptoms only.
What tests are involved in determining if a woman is menopausal?
No testing, unless under 40.
What should be given for symptomatic menopause?
HRT
Lifestyle advice
CBT
What can be given to help with hot flushes and night sweats experienced in the menopause?
SSRIs
What adverse effects are associated with HRT therapy?
Increased risk of breast cancer
Increased risk of DVT
Increased cardiovascular risk
In what individuals is HRT therapy contraindicated?
History of breast cancer CVD History of TIA/Stroke Unexplained vaginal bleeding Active liver disease
In those under 40, what should be given alongside HRT?
Contraception as ovulation may start again.
