Urinalysis Flashcards
1
Q
What is a urinalysis (3)
A
- Diagnostic stool
- Tells us what should and should not be in the urine
- A good indicator for disease or disorder
2
Q
What does the colour indicate (2)
A
- Clear → cloudy - an indication of infection
- Colourless → amber - changed by things like food or drugs.
3
Q
What does the specific gravity of a urinalysis indicate (4)
A
- The concentration of urine - stuff in urine (osmolarity)
- Normal specificc gravity = 1.003 → 1.03
- above 1.03 = dehydration (more stuff or not enough fluid), presence of glucose, not enough ADH = concentrated urine
- Below 1.003 = hydration, diabetes insipidus (no glucose in urine, too much ADH)
4
Q
What does pH in a urinalysis indicate (4)
A
- Normal pH range = 4.5 → 8.
- normally sits between 5.5 → 6.5
- More proteins = more acidic urine
- Bacteria splitting urea (UTI), food = More basic urine
5
Q
What does glucose in a urinalysis indicate (3)
A
- Ingested too much sugar
- Diabetes
- glucose overwhelms filtration, pulls water with it, increasing water production
6
Q
What does ketones in a urinalysis indicate (3)
A
- Indicator of type 1 diabetes
- insulin is not present, so alternate energy is produced in the form of ketones
- Ketones also produced on low carbohydrate diet
7
Q
What does blood (peroxidase activity) in a urinalysis indicate (3)
A
- Indicators of haemoglobin, myoglobin and erythrocyte function
- Erythrocytes don’t get filtered at the glomerulus (too big) therefore presence means damage or infection in the urinary tract
- Myoglobin and haemoglobin - get filtered in low amounts, higher levels may be caused by intense exercise. Also, crash injury (crushed muscle)
8
Q
What does protein in a urinalysis indicate (3)
A
- Proteins that get filtered are less than 20’000D (mw) - albumin, globulins
- Transient increased protein = heart failure, exercise stress, fever (short-term).
- Transient increased protein = damage to the glomerulus (long-term).
9
Q
What does nitrites in a urinalysis indicate (3)
A
- Should be in the urine
- Bacteria turns nitrates into nitrites
- Indicates UTI
10
Q
What does leukocytes in a urinalysis indicate (3)
A
- Indicator of infection
- UTI (culture needed to show the presence of bacteria)
- No bacteria = itis - inflammatory response
11
Q
What does bilirubin + urobilinogen in a urinalysis indicate (4)
A
- Red blood cells → spleen (breaks up haemoglobin) → heme → liver → bilirubin → bile → small intestine → urobilinogen
- This indicates too many red blood cells breaking down
- Liver dysfunction
- Problem with bile or bile ducts
