Formulation of liquid products Flashcards
1
Q
What are the main types of forms of liquid products (7)
A
- Syrup - aqueous sucrose filled solution
- Elixir - traditionally sucrose and alcohol
- Linctus - treatment of cough, sipped. Sugar (not exclusively sucrose)
- Mixture - aqueous solution and suspensions
- Suspension-particulate and need to be re-dispersed (e.g. aerosols)
- Emulsion - two phases, continuous and dispersed
- Tincture-ingredients of the above all alcoholic
2
Q
What liquid products can be taken but not swallowed (6)
A
- Emulsion
- Mouthwash and Gargle
- Nasal solution
- Ear (gutte) and Eye drop (aurist)
- Enema (injected into rectum to clear out waste matter)
- Douche (typically applied into the vagina for cleansing purposes)
3
Q
What are emulsions (3)
A
- A system of two immiscible liquid phases, one of which is dispersed throughout the other in the form of fine droplets.
- A third component. The emulsifying agent is necessary to stabilise the emulsion.
- An emulsion can be oil in water or water in oil and there are simple rules relating to the formation of primary emulsions
4
Q
What are ear, nose and eye drops (3)
A
- Originally distinguished as aurist (ear drops), narist (nose drops) and guttae (eye drops/drops in general).
- Oculentum means eye ointment. Some modern formulations appear to merge the pharmaceutical forms e.g. fucithalmic
- Only an eye drop needs to be sterile, since neither of the other orifices are sterile.
5
Q
What are the other types of liquid formulations (6)
A
- Application-solution or emulsion (parasiticides)
- Liniment-alcoholic or oily solution or emulsion
- Lotion-aqueous solution, suspension or emulsion
- Paint (or tincture)- concentrated aqueous or alcoholic solution
- Collodion-organic solvent containing keratolytic agents
- Shampoo-aqueous with a surfactant
6
Q
What are the types of medicinal waters (6)
A
- Water
- Distilled Water
- Water for preparations
- Aromatic Waters
- Water for Injections- Sterile Water
- Tap water = safe to use, Water from tank = unsafe
