Urethra Flashcards
Courses through the prostate gland
Posterior wall contains the urethral crest where the ejaculatory ducts open
Lateral to urethral crest are the prostatic ducts
Prostatic
3 components of male urethra
Prostatic
Membranous
Penile (spongy, cavernous)
Courses through the Urogenital diaphragm
Surrounded by deep transverse perineal muscle & sphincter urethrae muscle (external urethral sphincter)= both are skeletal mus, innervated by pudendal nerve
Membranous
Course through the penis
Surrounded by corpus Spongiosum
Enlarges into the fossa navicularis just before the external urethral orifice
Bulbourethral glands of Cowper opens just below the urogenital diaphragm
Penile (spongy, cavernous)
Courses through the Urogenital diaphragm
Surrounded by the DEEP TRANSVERSE PERINEAL MUSCLE & SPHINCTER URETHRAE MUSCLE (EXTERNAL URETHRAL SPHINCTER)
- both are skeletal muscles, innervated by PUDENDAL NERVE
posterior surface: fuses with the anterior vaginal wall
External urethral sphincter does not completely surround the female urethra
- high incidence of stress incontinence in women
External urethral orifice opens in the vestibule of he vagina between labia minora
Female urethra
MICTURATION REFLEX
Sensory: stretch receptors travel to the sacral spinal cord through pelvic splanchnic nerves (parasympathetics, S2-S4)
Motor: pelvic splanchnic nerves (parasympathetic, S2-S4) –> detrussor muscle contract
Sphincter urethrae muscle (ext urethral sphincter)
- voluntary
- innervated by pudendal nerve
