TONGUE Flashcards
Divisble into right and left halves by:
Median groove / median sulcus
Tongue is attached to
Styloid process and soft palate above
Mandible
Hyoid bone below
Parts and surfaces of the tongue
ROOT - inferior, relatively fixed part attached to hyoid and mandible; posterior 3rd
BODY - anterior 3rd
APEX - pointed anterior
DORSUM
INFERIOR
Mucous membrane of the tongue
UPPER SURFACE - divided into anterior (oral) and posterior (pharyngeal) parts - V SHAPED SULCUS - SULCUS TERMINALIS
APEX projects backward and is marked by a small pit - FORAMEN CECUM
3 types of PAPILLAE present on the upper suface of anterior 2/3 - FILIFORM, FUNGIFORM and VALLATE
POST 1/3 - DEVOID PAPILLAE but has a nodular irregular surface - LINGUAK TONSIL
Lingual papillae
Vallate
Filiform
Fungiform
Foliate
large and flat-topped
Lie directly anterior ro the terminal sulcus
Vallate
Long and numerous
Contanin afferent nerve endings that are sensitive to touch
Filiform
Mushroom shaped
Most numerous at the apex and sides
Fungiform
Small lateral folds of the lingual mucosa
Poorly developed in humans
Foliate
Intrinsic muscles of the tongue
Innervated by HYPOGLOSSAL NERVE (CN XII)
Superior and inferior longitudinal
Transverse
Vertical
Extrinsic muscles of the tongue
Alter the POSITION of the tongue
Innervated by HYPOGLOSSAL NERVE EXCEPT PALATOGLOSSUS by vagus nerve
Muscles of the tongue
PALATOGLOSSUS - elevation
STYLOGLOSSUS - retraction
HYOGLOSSUS - depression
GENIOGLOSSUS - protrusion
Mobile, muscular organ
Involved with MASTICATION, GUSTATION, DEGLUTITION, ARTICULATION, ORAL CLEANSING
Mass of STRIATED MUSCLE covered with mucous membrane
ANTERIOR 2/3 - mouth
POSTERIOR 1/3 - pharynx
Tongue
Nerv supply of muscle of tongue
CN 12 EXCEPT PALATOGLOSSUS (CN 10)
Nerve supply mucous membrane of tongue
Anterior 2/3 by CN V
Posterior 1/3 by CN IX
