Innervated the muscles of facial expression
Has no function in the parotid gland

Branches of EXTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY
Venous drainage
RETROMANDIBULAR VEIN ➡️ external jugular vein
Postganglionic sympathetic
Secretion of thick mucus
Superior cervical ganglion
Travel within tympanic nerve and lesser petrosal nerve ➡️ synapse on cell bodies within the otic ganglion
PREGANGLIONIC PARASYMPATHETIC
Inferior savilary nuclesus of glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)
Leave the otic ganglion and travel with auriculotemporal nerve of trigeminal nerve (CN V) to the parotid gland
Watery secretion
POSTGANGLIONIC PARASYMPATHETIC
Carries postganglionic sympathetic fibers to sweat glands of the head & postganglionic parasympathetic fibers to the parotid gland
Auriculotemporal nerve of CN V
Sweating whenever the person eats
Frey syndrome
IP paralysis of upper and lower face
Loss of corneal reflex
Loss of taste on anterior 2/3 of the tongue
Hyperacusis (⬆️ auditory acuity)
Facial nerve (CN VII) Bell palsy - Lower motor neuron lesion (facial nerve CN VII)
Tearing whenever the person eats
Crocodile tears syndrome
Affected by stroke within the internal capsule
CL paralysis of lower face but spares the upper face
Facial nerve (CN VII) stroke (upper motor neuron lesion)
