upper limbs Flashcards
what is the ribcage attached to?
vertical column
what is the sternum?
breastbone - lies flat in the middle and has a t shape
how can the sternum be divided?
into 3 parts:
manubrium, body and the xiphoid process
what connects the manubrium and body of sternum?
sternal angle-fibrocartilage joint
what is the jugular notch?
superior aspect of the manubrium. concave - producing a depression
what is the xiphisternal joint?
is a symphysis between the inferior margin of the body of the sternum and the superior margin of the xiphoid process.
how many ribs are there?
12
how many of each break down ribs are there?
7 true ribs, 4 false ribs
which are the floating ribs?
11, 12
how do ribs attach to the sternum?
via cartilage
which rib intersects the sternal angle fibrocartilage?
rib 2
how do false ribs attach to sternum?
indirectly via cartilage - ribs 8,9,10 join rib 7 which attaches to sternum
what do floating ribs attach to?
diaphragm
how many moveable bones are there in the vertebral column?
24
what separates the vertebrae?
intervertebral discs
what type of joint connects the v column? why good for v column?
facet joints. The joints between the articular facets, allow for some gliding motions between the vertebrae.
where do you find 5 fused sacral v?
at the end
what are 5 fused sacral v followed by?
4 fused cocygeal v
how would you describe the v column?
rigid yet flexible
what is scapula aka?
shoulder blade
where does the scapula articulate with the humerus?
glenohumeral joint
how does upper limb attach the axial skeleton? which bones does this consist of?
via the pectoral girdle. scapula and clavicle
name for sternum and clavicle joint?
sterno-clavicular joint
name of bones in forearm?
radius and ulna
describe position of radius and ulna
radius is most lateral bone - gives rise to the thumb
name of upper arm bone/
humerus
wristbones aka?
carpal
how many bones in carpal?
8
which are the relevant bones in the carpal?
scaphoid and lunate. articulate with the radius and ulna and allow it twist.
which bones are in the palm of the hand? how many?
metacarpal - 5
how many phalanges in the thumb?
2 (proximal and distal)
how many phalanges in the fingers?
3 (proximal, middle and distal)
how many phalanges?
14
