breastbone - lies flat in the middle and has a t shape
how can the sternum be divided?
into 3 parts:
manubrium, body and the xiphoid process
what connects the manubrium and body of sternum?
sternal angle-fibrocartilage joint
what is the jugular notch?
superior aspect of the manubrium. concave - producing a depression
what is the xiphisternal joint?
is a symphysis between the inferior margin of the body of the sternum and the superior margin of the xiphoid process.
how many ribs are there?

7 true ribs, 4 false ribs
which are the floating ribs?
11, 12
how do ribs attach to the sternum?
via cartilage
which rib intersects the sternal angle fibrocartilage?

how do false ribs attach to sternum?
indirectly via cartilage - ribs 8,9,10 join rib 7 which attaches to sternum
what do floating ribs attach to?
diaphragm
