Introduction to Anatomy Flashcards
What is anatomy?
The branch of science concerned with bodily structure of humans, animals and other living organisms, especially as revealed by dissection and the separation of parts
Anterior refers to?
The front
Posterior refers to
The back
Anterior aka?
Ventral
Posterior aka?
Dorsal
Superior refers to
X is located higher on the vertical axis
Inferior refers to
X is located lower on the vertical axis
Superior aka?
cranial
Inferior aka?
Caudal
Medial refers to?
Towards the midline
Lateral refers to?
Away from the midline
Superficial refers to?
skin deep
What are the three anatomical planes?
Sagittal, coronal and transverse planes
What is the sagittal plane?
Vertical line that divides body into right and left
What is coronal plane?
Vertical line that divides anterior and posterior part of body
Transverse plane?
Horizontal plane that divides the body in an superior and inferior section
What is flexion?
Movement that reduce the angle of a joint.
Which parts of body is flexion forward?
Above the knee
What is extension?
Increases the angle of the joint
What is abduction movement?
Movement away from the midline
What is an adduction movement?
Movement towards the midline
What is internal rotation?
Rotation towards the midline
What is external rotation?
Rotation away from midline
What is pronation?
Palm faces posteriorly. Twisting of the radius over the ulna
What is supernation?
Palms faces anteriorly
Where is dorsum on feet and hands?
Feet - top.
Hands - fingernail side
what is inversion of ankle joint?
Movement of plantar surface of foot towards midline
Eversion of ankle joint?
Movement of plantar surface away from midline
What is dorsiflexion?
Dorsiflexion refers to flexion at the ankle, so that the foot points more superiorly.
What is plantar flexion?
Plantarflexion refers extension at the ankle, so that the foot points inferiorly.
Proximal refer to?
describes a structure (limbs) that are closer to the trunk
Distal refers to?
describes a structure (limbs) that further away from the trunk
what is is called when have full movement around joints - e.g. shoulder
circumduction
