Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
what is the role of the autonomic NS?
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates body homeostasis. It in involuntary control of body processes such as breathing, heart beat and digestive processes.
how can you divide the Automatic Nervous system?
into the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic NS (rest and digest)
How many cranial nerves are there
12 cranial nerves
where do the spinal nerves come from
- the spinal cord
why are there 8 cervical nerves (but onl7 7 cervicsl vert)
this is because C1-7 emerge superior to the vertebrae for which they are named
c8 emerges inferior to c7 vertebrae
- below this each spinal nerve leaves the vertebral column inferior to there numbered vertebrae
where does the sciatic nerve pass down
passes down the posterior leg
where does the dermatomes of C5-C8 run down
run down the arm
where are the preganglionic fibres in the parasympathetic NS?
preganglionic fibres: occur from the opposite ends of the spinal cord (cranial outflow and sacral outflow). preganglionic axons extend from the CNS nearly all the way to the structures they innerviate.
IN PARASYM - PREGANGLIONIC IS LONG, POST GANGLIONIC SHORT
what is the main role of the autonomic NS? (ANS)?
- where do the preganglionic fibres of the sympathetic division arise from?
supplies organs AND the periphery vessels
- preganglionic fibres arise from: T1 to L2
-
describe the path of preganglionic sympathetic fibres from spinal cord
preganglionic fibres
- leave spinal cord: via ventral root
- pass through white rami communicates
- enter adjoining sympathetic trunk / chain (one on each side)
SHORT PREGANGLIONIC FIBRE, LONG POST GANGLIONIC FIBRE
which one is the sympathetic chain?
yellow - lateral to vertebral column
