Upper Limb 3 Flashcards
How many groups are the muscles of the anterior forearm split into?
Superficial
Intermediate
Deep
What are the superficial anterior forearm muscles?
Pronator teres
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Flexor carpi radialis
Palmaris longus
What is the action of pronator teres?
Pronates and flexes forearm
What is the action of flexor carpi ulnaris?
Flexion and adduction at wrist
What is the action of flexor carpi radialis?
Flexion and abduction at wrist
What is palmaris longus continuous with?
Palmar aponeurosis
What is the action of the brachioradialis?
Weak flexion at elbow
What is different about brachioradialis compared to the other flexors?
It is in the posterior compartment and is supplied by the radial nerve
How many tendons are produced from the FDS?
4 (going to digits 2-5)
What is the action of FDS?
Flexion at wrist and PIP
What is the innervation of all of the anterior forearm muscles (apart from the ulnar half of FDP and flexor carpi ulnaris)?
Median nerve
What are the deep group anterior forearm muscles?
FDP, flexor pollicis longus, pronator quadratus
What is the action of FDP?
Flexion at wrist and DIP of digits 2-5
What innervates FDP?
Ulnar 1/2 = ulnar nerve
Lateral 1/2 = median nerve
What is the action of flexor pollicis longus?
Flexion of thumb
What is the action of pronator quadratus?
Pronates forearm and deeper fibres bind radius and ulna together
Where does the pronator quadratus insert and originate?
Origin: ulnar
Insertion: radius
What nerve goes under the flexor retinaculum?
Median nerve
What are the borders of the carpal tunnel?
Roof: flexor retinaculum
Medial: scaphoid and trapezium
Medial: pisiform and hamate
