Unit One: Diversity of Life Flashcards
Provide an example of non-living objects that can reproduce
Crystals, virus
Provide an example of a living organism that does not reproduce
Living things that reproduce sexually but are alone like female or male (ex: male rabbit), mules or others sterile individuals, some hybrids
Example of non-living thing that grows
Stalagmites, crystals
Example of living thing that does not grow
adults (doesn’t get bigger after a certain time)
Characteristics that should be considered in a living organism
Homeostasis (electrolyte levels, temperature, killing things we don’t need, hard to test but it is what keeps you alive), reproduce or regenerate and evolve and adapt
What can you observe in a cell that can reproduce
Similar DNA in offspring
What can you observe in a sample that can grow
larger in size over time (unicellular is population growth)
What can you observe if the sample uses energy to metabolize
It transforms nutrients and the waste product increases with time
Which macromolecules are polymers
Carbohydrates: some are polymers of saccharides
Proteins: polymers of amino acids
Nucleic acids: polymers of nucleotides
Which macromolecule (s) are composed of nucleotides
Nucleic acid
Which macromolecule(s) are composed of amino acids
Proteins
Which macromolecule(s) are synthesized in human bodies?
All four type can be made in the body (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acid)
Which macromolecules(s) can be used as fuel ?
Carbohydrates and lipids and sometimes proteins (last resort)
Which macromolecule(s) can be used as hormones?
Proteins and lipids
Which macromolecules(s) can provide scructure ?
Carbohydrates like chitin composes the external skeleton of insects. Proteins like microtubules provide the structure of the cell
