Which Cranial Nerve functions to provide the sense of smell?
Cranial Nerve 1 (Olfactory)
Which Cranial Nerve provides the sensation of touch, temperature, and pain from the head/neck, corneal sensation, and controls mastication?
Cranial Nerve 5 (Trigeminal)
Which Cranial Nerve controls eye movements, contracts eyes, and changes diameter of the pupil?
Cranial Nerve 3 (Oculomotor)
Which Cranial Nerve allows for tongue movement?
Cranial Nerve 12 (Hypoglossal)
Which Cranial Nerve provides for vocal chord movement and sensation to the pharnyx and larynx?
Cranial Nerve 10 (Vagus)
Which Cranial Nerve deals with hearing and balance?
Cranial Nerve 8 (Auditory)
Which Cranial Nerve allows lateral eye movements?
Cranial Nerve 6 (Abducens)
Which Cranial Nerve promotes head and shoulder rotation?
Cranial Nerve 11 (Accessory)
Which Cranial Nerve provides visual acuity and visual fields?
Cranial Nerve 2 (Optic)
Which Cranial Nerve provides ocular movements?
Cranial Nerve 4 (Trochlear)
Which Cranial Nerve provides facial expressions and sense of taste?
Cranial Nerve 7 (Facial)
Which Cranial Nerve allows taste on posterior 1/3 of tongue, swallowing ability, and tongue movements.
Cranial Nerve 9 (Glossopharyngeal)
How is Cranial Nerve 1 (Olfactory) assessed?
Eyes are closed, and patient asked to identify smells (coffee, vanilla, cinnamon).
How is Cranial Nerve 4 (Trochlear) assessed?
Asking the patient to follow the six EOM (Extra Ocular Movements)
How is Cranial Nerve 8 (Auditory) assessed?
Ability to hear spoken word.
Use of tuning fork.
Heel-Toe walking in straight line.
How is Cranial Nerve 9 (Glossopharyngeal) assessed?
Swallowing water. Applying tastes (Sweet, Salty, Bitter, Sour) to posterior tongue.
How is Cranial Nerve 12 (Hypoglossal) assessed?
Ask pt to stick out tongue (should be midline).
Ask pt to move tongue side-side and up-down.
How is Cranial Nerve 6 (Abducens) assessed?
Six EOM (Extra Ocular Movements)
How is Cranial Nerve 5 (Trigeminal) assessed?
Pt closes eyes, identifies touch.
Eye drop to test for blink reflex.
Ask pt to clench teeth.
How is Cranial Nerve 7 (Facial) assessed?
Ask pt to: smile, frown, show teeth, close both eyes, puff cheeks, whistle, raise eyebrows.
Test for taste on anterior 2/3 of tongue.
How is Cranial Nerve 11 (Accessory) assessed?
Apply resistance and ask pt to raise shoulders/turn head. Observe for symmetry of movement.
How is Cranial Nerve 2 (Optic) assessed?
Ask pt to read a magazine, identify letters on snellen chart, test peripheral vision.
How is Cranial Nerve 3 (Oculomotor) assessed?
Penlight to pupil for reaction. 6 EOM (Extra Ocular Movements)
How is Cranial Nerve 10 (Vagus) assessed?
Ask pt to pronounce sounds such as K, Q, Ch, B, and D
On old Olympus treeless top,a Finn and German view a hop.
