Unit 9 Flashcards
what is the circulatory system
a system of blood vessels with a pump and valves to ensure one way flow of blood
what is double circulation
the blood passes through the heart twice for each circulation
one circuit links the heart and the lungs while the other links the rest of the body
what is single circulation
blood passes through the heart once
what are the avantages of double circulation
low blood pressure circulation to the lungs
high blood pressure circulation to body tissues
where does blood travel away and to the heart in
travels from in arteries and travels to in veins
why is the muscles of the left side of the heart stronger
they have to pump blood to the whole heart while the right side only needs to pump to the lungs
what does the septum do
stop the blood from each side mixing
What is Coronary Heart Disease
when the coronary arteries get blocked due to fats and lack of exercise
can lead to heart attacks
what are the different blood vessels
artery, arteriole, capillary, venule, vein
what is the structure of the artery
they are thicker and more muscular since they withstand higher pressure
the lumen is tinier to maintain high pressure
what is the structure of veins
have thin walls since they only withstand low pressure
require valves to stop the backflow of blood
what is the structure of capillaries
they are one cell thick to allow diffusion to be quick
what blood vessels does the kidney use
renal artery and renal vein
what blood vessel does the lung use
pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein
what blood bessel does the liver use
hepatic artery
hepatic vein
portal vein
