Unit 6 Flashcards
what is photosynthesis
the process that allows plants to make carbohydrates from raw materials, using energy from light
what is the formula for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide +water = glucose + oxygen
what does photosynthesis require
they can only happen in the presence of light and chlorophyll
where is chlorophyll found
in chloroplast that is found in plant cells and absorbs energy transferred by light
what is the chemical equation of photosynthesis
6C02 + 6H20 = C6H12O6 + 6O2
how is glucose made in photosynthesis stored
stored in leaves as starch
what happens to glucose in plants
converted to sucrose when being transported and can easily be changed back to glucose
what does it mean that the process of photosynthesis is controlled by enzymes
it works best at an optimal temperature
what is a limiting factor
a factor that prevents the rate of photosynthesis from increasing
if aerobic respiration continually happens in plant cells and since photosynthesis happens in the presence of light, what can be deduced
at low light intensities, plants will release carbon dioxide
at high light intensities, plants will release oxygen
what is the function of the cuticle
waxy layer that stops water from evaporating
what is chloroplast
contains chlorophyll and is the site of photosynthesis
what is the upper epidermis
thin layer that lets light pass throuhg and protects the inner cells
what is the palisade mesophyll cells
box shaped cells that are packed close together and have lots of chloroplasts
is the tissue in which photosynthesis happens
what is the xylem
carries water and mineral ions from the root to the leaf
what is the phloem
carries sucrose away from the leaf
what is the vascular bundle
contains the phloem and xylem
what is the lower epidermis
protects the inner cells
thin layer
what are the guard cells
works in pairs to control the size of the opening of the stoma
when flaccid, its closed
when turgid, its open
what is the stomata
controls the diffusion of water vapour and gases in and out of the lead
what is the spongey mesophyll
site of gas exchange where cells are loosely spaced, creating space to allow diffusion of gases throughout the leaf
