Brinkmanship
The act of pursing a dangerous policy to the limits of safety before backing down (associated with the Cold War arms race)
Detente
The easing of hostility or strained relations between countries; a lessening of tension
Non-aligned nations
The independent countries that remained neutral; in the Cold War competition; also known as third world nations
Proxy war
Conflict between two nations where neither country directly engages the other; during the Cold War, the United States and the USSR would participate in proxy wars
Glasnot
A Soviet policy permitting open discussion of political and social issues and freer dissemination of news and information
Perestroika
The program of economic and political reform in the Soviet Union initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1986
Partition
A division of a territory into parts, like the 1947 division of the British colony of India into the two nations of India and Pakistan
Proliferation
A growth or spread; especially the spread of nuclear weapons to nations that do not currently have them
