Imperialism
Policy in which a strong national seeks to dominate other countries politically, economically, or socially
Extraterritoriality
-The right of foreign residents in a country to live under the laws of their native country and disregard the laws of the host country
-Europeans and American nationals living in areas of Chinese and Ottoman cities were granted this right
Annexation
The adding of a region to the territory of an existing policitcal unit
Social Darwinism
-The application of Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution and “survival of the fittest” to humans
-justification for imperialist expansion
Sphere of Influence
-An area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges
-Includes treaty ports (trade cities opened to foreign residents because of forced treaties)
Economic imperialism
Independent but less developed nations controlled by private business interests rather than by other governments
White Dominions
-Colonies in which European settlers made up the over-whelming majority of the population
-Small numbers of native people as they were killed off by disease and conflicts
Contested settler societies
-Featured large-scale European settlement despite the existence of large amounts of native people
-Generally resulted in clashes over land, resources, social statuses, and culture differences
Protectorate
A country/territory with its own internal government but under the control of an outside power
Berlin Conference
-European powers met in Berlin to divide up Africa
-Beginning of Germany’s imperial power
Migration
-the movement of people from one place to another with the intentions of settling (permanently/temporarily) at a new location
“Push” factors
-Factors that can cause people to migrate to a new location
-EX: conflict, drought, famine, extreme religious activity, poor economy, or lack of jobs
“Pull” factors
-Factors that can draw migrants to a location
-EX: economic opportunities, better living conditions, more jobs, or religious freedom
Ethnic enclaves
A geographic area with high ethnic concentration, characteristic cultural identity, and economic activity
Diaspora
-A scattered population whose origin lies in separate geographic locales
-Historically referred to as involuntary mass dispersion of a population from its native lands
