Unit 5 Vocabulary Flashcards
A protective protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of a foreign substance.
Antibody
An enzyme which catalyses the destruction of the cell walls of certain bacteria, and occurs notably in tears and egg white.
Lysozyme
Bacteria which are found in or on our bodies on a semipermanent basis without causing disease.
Normal flora (commensals)
A localized physical condition in which part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful.
Inflammation
A protein released by animal cells, usually in response to the entry of a virus, which has the property of inhibiting virus replication.
Interferon
Blood clotting substance, can fill in tears in the skin.
Fibrinogen
Process that occurs if an antigen is mixed with its corresponding antibody called isoagglutinin.
Agglutination
They are part of the immune system and develop from stem cells in the bone marrow. They help protect the body from infection and may help fight cancer.
T-lymphocyte
A toxin or other foreign substance which induced an immune response in the body.
Antigen
Renewed rapid production of an antibody following second or later contact with the provoking antigen or with related antigens.
Anamnestic response
A slimy substance secreted by mucous membranes and glands for lubrication and protection.
Mucus
Inactivated exotoxins examples are tetanus and diphtheria.
Toxoid
The ingestion of bacteria or other material by phagocytes.
Phagocytosis
An inflammatory mediator. Also released by damaged cells which produces pain in the affected area.
Bradykinin
Type of immunization given to all who reach a certain age examples are MMR, DPT, polio.
Routine immunization
