MO: bacteria- very sensitive to drying, cold, chemicals.
Transmission: sexual intercourse, mouth to mouth. After 18 weeks it passes across the placenta.
Treatment: penicillin/other antibiotics.
Syphilis
Most common cause of female sterility.
MO: bacteria, very susceptible to drying.
Transmission: direct intimate contact.
Symptoms: Males: 2-6 days, thick yellow discharge from penis, painful urination, can result in sterility.
Females: 85% no symptoms, dull pelvic area cramps, accumulation of pus in reproduction organs.
Gonorrhea
Most common STD in total number of cases.
MO: virus.
Symptoms: causes painful blisters, also fever, aches, swollen lymph glands.
Complications: infants severe with 25% fatality rate.
Treatment: acyclovir, will not prevent blisters from coming back.
Prevention: avoid contact with infected individuals.
Genital Herpes type 2
MO: chlamydia- similar to trachoma MO
Transmission: sexual contact, direct contact.
Symptoms: Male: painful discharge from penis not pus-filled.
Female: no symptoms, cause infertility.
Pregnant women: miscarriage, newborn deaths.
Treatment: antibiotics
Chlamydia
MO: herpes virus
Transmission: sexual intercourse, breast milk, blood transfusions.
Symptoms: few obvious symptoms, fever, malaise, anemia.
Treatment: possible vaccine
Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
MO: papilloma virus Symptoms: warts on the genital Complications: cervical cancer Treatment: removal of warts by physician Prevention: vaccine
Genital warts
MO: retrovirus. RNA virus with a reverse transcription enzyme.
Transmission: intimate contact with bodily fluid transfer.
Treatment: symptomatic, experimental drugs.
Prevention: avoid contact with infected carrier.
