Unit 5: The Muscoloskeletal System Flashcards
What are the major bones in the human body?
Long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones and sesamoid bones
What are the major muscles in the human body?
Skeletal muscles, smooth muscles and cardiac muscles
What are Long Bones?
Bones for mobility, found in the arms and legs
ex: Humerous (Upper arm), femur (thigh)
What are flat bones?
Protector bones, found in the skull, pelvis and ribs.
ex: occipital bone (skull), sternum, illiac crest (hips)
What are irregular bones?
Thin layers of compact bones
ex: vertebra and illium (hips)
What are sesamoid bones?
Bones embedded in tendons, holds tendons away from joints to help facilitate greater leverage
ex: patella (knee cap) and pisiform
What are skeletal muscles?
muscles attached to bones, they facilitate motor functions
What are smooth muscles?
Smooth muscles line internal organs, blood vessels and glands. They move slowly and steadily.
What are cardiac muscles?
Only found in the heart, they’re able to stimulate themselves
What is the relationships between bones, muscles and connective tissue?
Bones provide a structure for the muscles of the body, muscles contract allowing movement, and they’re all held together by connective tissue.
What are ligaments?
The connective tissue that connects bones to bones
What are tendons?
The connective tissues that connect muscles to bones
What is the axial skeleton?
The upper body bone groups that protect the vital organs
ex: skull, thorax and spinal vertebral column
What is the appendicular skeleton?
The bones within the extremities, as well as the hips, and shoulder girdle. They facilitate movement
