Unit 15: Pupils Flashcards
What is normal a normal range for pupil size?
Both pupils should be 2-6mm
assess after the pupils have adjusted to room light
Should both pupils be similar?
Both should be roughly the same size or shape under normal conditions
Reactivity: Normal pupils
Pupils should constrict quickly when exposed to light, and dilate when the light source is removed.
How do you test pupils?
Dim the lights (if possible) and move a light source from the outside of the pupil to the middle
Pupil Appearance/Reactivity: Dilated
caused by fright, blood loss, drugs or eye drops
Pupil Appearance/Reactivity: constricted
caused by drug treatments with eye drops
Pupil Appearance/Reactivity: unequal
can be caused by stroke, head injury, eye injury. It can also just be an artificial eye.
Pupil Appearance/Reactivity: Non-reactive
can caused by drugs, lack of oxygen to the brain, death
Pupil Appearance/Reactivity: Sluggish
can be caused by brain swelling, brain injury, medications and drugs.
What is PERL?
Pupils Equal and Reactive to Light
What is ERL?
Equal and Reactive to Light
How do you record Pupil Presentation?
Record time on the 24hr clock, document the size, symmetry and reactivity of the pupils
*use PERL if the pupils are equal and reactive to light
Ex: 0845hrs -PERL at 4mm
Ex: 2215hrs -pinpoint and reactive to light at 6mm
