Unit 11: Pulse Rate Flashcards
1. Identify normal and abnormal pulse rates, and the factors that influence them 2. Identify the locations where the pulse can be palpated 3.Obtain an accurate pulse including rate rhythm and quality using palpation. 4.Record a pulse Rate using Standard notion
Pulse Rate: What is a pulse rate?
Measurement of heart rate, ie: the number of times the heart beats a minute
Pulse Rate: What is palpation?
Us the index and middle finger to press against an artery where it lies close to the skin.
Pulse Locations: Carotid
Either side of the trachea
Pulse Locations: Brachial
Inside of the upper arm, near the elbow
Pulse Locations: Apical
Left of intercostal space, left of the sternum. (Use stethoscope, primarily used on infants)
Pulse Locations: Radial
Lateral side of the wrist (outside)
Pulse location: Femoral
upper groin, either side
Pulse Locations: Popliteral
Behind the knee
Pulse Locations: Ulnar
Medial Side of the wrist (inside)
Pulse Locations: Dorsalis Pedis
Top of the foot, superior to the big toe
Pulse Locations: Posterior Tibalis
Medial side of the ankle
Pulse Check: Adult
Primarily use the carotid and radial as to compare central and peripheral pulse
Pulse Check: Child/Infant
Brachial Pulse point
Pulse Rate: Normal Adult
60-100
Pulse rate: Normal Child
80-150
Pulse Rate: Normal Infant
120-150
Pulse Rate: Bradycardia
Slow pulse <60/m
Pulse Rate: Tachycardia
Fast pulse >100/m
Pulse Rate: Slow & Fast symptoms
decreased consciousness level, chest pain, respiratory distress, low blood pressure, shock
Pulse Check: what is rhythm?
is the heart beating regularly or irregularly? medications, stress caffeine, etc can cause irregular breathing
Pulse Check: What is quality?
Character of the pulse. Is it strong? Weak? Bounding (unusually strong)? threading (weak and rapid)?
Recording Pulse: What do you make note of?
Time on the 24hr clock
Pulse rate, Rhythm and Quality
Differences in rate between pulse locations (may indicate a bleed)
Pulse Check: How do you get a pulse rate?
Count the number of beats you feel in 15 seconds, multiple it by 4.
If the pulse is weak or irregular, count for 30 seconds and multiple by 2.
