Unit 4, The Cardio Vascular System Flashcards
What are the components of the cardiovascular system?
The heart, arteries/arterioles, veins/veinules, capillaries and blood
What makes up the structure of the heart?
3 layers of muscle, 2 ventricles, and 2 atria
Layers of the heart: Epicardium
Outer layer of the heart, also know as the visceral layer
Layers of the heart: Myocardium
Middle layer, made up of cardiac muscle fibers, responsible for pumping
Layers of the heart: Endocardium:
smooth inner layer, covers the vibreous “skeleton” of the heart
What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
It carries oxygen, nutrients and hormones to cells all over the body. It also carries waste products to be expunged from the body.
What is Pulmonary Circulation?
Carries blood from the heart to lungs and back again.
What is Systemic Circulation?
Blood is carried from heart out through the arteries, artertioles and capillaries to cells, and returned through the venous system
Compensatory Mechanisms for Blood loss: Vascular Spasm
Smooth Muscle in the blood vessels and walls contract immediately as the vessel wall is breached, this immediately reduces blood loss, which gives time for other mechanisms to activate
Compensatory Mechanisms for Blood loss: Platelet Plug Formation
Platelet’s come into contact with damaged blood vessels, they form a platelet plug to close the broken blood vessel
Compensatory Mechanisms for Blood loss: Blood clotting
Liquid blood solidifies over the breach
