What is Blood Pressure?
A measurement of how well tissues of the body are getting oxygen & nutrients they need, the force of blood against the walls of the arteries.
What is systolic pressure?
the blood pressure when the heart is contracting, which forces blood through the arteries.
What is diastolic pressure?
the blood pressure resulting from relaxation of the heart between contractions
Normal Blood Pressure: Adults
120/80
Abnormal Blood Pressure: Hypertension
systolic rate is >140
caused by smoking, alcohol, poor fitness, etc
symptoms: fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea, vision problems
Abnormal Blood Pressure: Hypotension
systolic rate is <100
caused by dehydration, bleeding, disease, anaphylaxis etc
symptoms: blurred vsion, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, nausea, weakness, pale skin
What is Aucultation Blood Pressure?
taking a blood pressure reading using a sphygometer and stethoscope
What is Palpation Blood Pressure?
taking a manual blood pressure reading by palpating the radial or brachial pulse points.
What is a sphygomanometer?
Made of an inflatable cuff, and a mercury manometer to measure blood pressure
What is a stethoscope?
used for listening (ausculation) to the heart rate and lungs
Blood pressure is measured in?
Millimetres of mercury (mmHg)
Systolic Blood Pressure: Adult
Usually 100 + patients age
Systolic blood pressure: child
usually 2x child’s age + 80
Diastolic blood pressure: Adult Male
65-90 mmHg
Diastolic Blood Pressure: Adult Female
55-80 mmHg
