Unit 1: Anatomy & Physiology Overview Flashcards
1. Define Anatomy and Physiology 2.identify the anatomical positions, planes, directional terms used in association with the human body 3.Identify The principle body cavities, and the organs that reside within them 4.Identify the Major Body Systems
Define Anatomy:
The structure of the body.
Define Physiology:
The Study of the function of the body and the physical and chemical aspects involved in its activities
Anatomical Position:
Patient standing erect, arms at their side, palms facing you
Supine Position:
Patient lying face up on their back
Prone Position
Patient is lying face down on their stomach
Lateral Recumbent Position:
Patient is lying on their side (left or right)
Superior:
toward, closer to the head
Inferior:
toward, closer to the feet
Anterior:
Toward the the front
Posterior:
Toward the back
Medial:
Toward the midline or the centre of the body
Lateral:
Left or right side of the midline
Proximal:
closer or near to the point of reference
Distal:
Distant or father away from the point of reference
Superficial
near the surface
Deep:
far from the surface
Internal
inside
External
Outside
Body Cavities: Thoracic Cavity

Body Cavity: Abdominal Cavity
Organs of digestion: stomach, liver, gallbladder, pleen, pancreas, kidneys
Body Cavities: Pelvic Cavity
Bladder, rectum, internal female reproductive organs
Body Cavities: Cranial Cavity:
The brain
Body Cavities: Spinal Cavity
The spinal column

Major body systems: Musculoskeletal system
made up of bones, muscles, ligaments and tedons
Major body systems: Respiratory System:
supplies oxygen and removes waste, lungs, pharynx trachea, etc
Major body systems: Circulatory System
moves oxygen and nutrients. heart, blood, veins, arteries
Major body systems: Nervous System
manages body, conscious thought. Brain, nerves, spinal column
Major body systems: Integumentary system
the skin, protects internal organs
Major body systems: Digestive system
passage for food, and absorption of nutrients. stomach intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas
Major body systems: Urinary System
filters blood and excretes waste, kidneys, ureters, bladder urethra
Major body systems: Endocrine System
glands that excrete hormones. thyroid, pituitary, parathyroid, adrenal glands, ovaries, etc
