Unit 5 - Lower Limb: Ligaments of the Knee Joint (Ex. IV) Flashcards
M and L sides (2)
M (tibial) collateral ligament (MCL)
L (fibular) collateral ligament (LCL)
P side (2)
oblique popliteal ligament
arcuate popliteal ligament
intrinsic ligaments (4)
anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
transverse ligament of knee
posterior meniscofemoral ligament
A side (5)
patellar ligament M longitudinal patellar retinaculum L longitudinal patellar retinaculum M transverse patellar retinaculum L transverse patellar retinaculum
What are the extracapsular ligaments of the knee?
M (tibial) and L (fibular) collateral ligaments
oblique popliteal ligament
arcuate ligament
What are the intracapsular ligaments of the knee?
A cruciate ligament
P cruciate ligament
Why are the ACL and PCL “intracapsular?”
they are w/in the joint capsule
- *however - not w/in the synovial membrane capsule ==> extrasynovial**
- synovial fluid is between the condyles and tibial plateau but not w/in the intercondylar eminence where the ACL and PCL attach
What motions does the MCL resist?
valgus force
L tibial rotation
What motions does the LCL resist?
varus force
limits excessive L tibial rotation
Which ligament is more mobile?
LCL –> bc MCL is attached to M meniscus
What motions does the ACL resist?
A translation of tibia on femur
hyperextension
What motion does the PCL resist?
P translation of tibia on femur
