Unit 5 - Lower Limb: Gait Cycle (Ex. IV) Flashcards
What % does the stance phase make up?
~60%
What % does the swing phase make up?
~40%
What does one cycle of gait consist of?
action of one leg through each of the 2 phases
sequence of stance phase
heel strike –> stabilization of pelvis as foot accepts weight of the body –> stabilization of pelvis, knee, and ankle at midstance –> push off that includes “heel lift” and “toe off” and stablization of pelvis
arches of foot are preserved throughout stance phase
sequence of swing phase
forward acceleration of the thigh –> foot clears ground as it swings forward –> thigh decelerates in preparation for landing –> knee extends and positions foot as foot prepares for heel strike
muscles active in heel strike of stance phase
hip extensors
dorsiflexors
muscles active in initial pelvis stabilization as foot accepts body weight of stance phase
hip adductors
knee extensors
plantar flexors
muscles active at midstance w/ stabilization of pelvis, knee, and ankle of stance phase
hip abductors
knee extensors
plantar flexors
muscles active in terminal push off of stance phase
hip abductors
plantar flexors
muscles active in forward acceleration of thigh of swing phase
hip flexors
muscles active when foot clears ground to swing forward in swing phase
dorsiflexors
muscles active in deceleration of thigh in swing phase
hip extensors
muscles active in heel strike/knee extension positioning of foot in swing phase
knee extensors
dorsiflexors
What are the 2 phases of the gait cycle?
stance phase
swing phase
