Inappropriate Px Sexual Behavior
verbal or physical acct of an expllicit or perceived sexual nature, which is unacceptable within the social context in which it is carried out
Spectrum of behaviors
staring, gestures, romantic gifts, suggestive remarks, propositions, genital exposure, unnecessary touching or physical proximity, sexual assault, threats, rape
IPSB stem from:
unmet emotional needs of px, advocate exploring px feelings and providing affection, view behavior as sexual harassment and px as adversary
Usual response to IPSB
passive: ignore or joke about behavior, blame themselves
aggressive: belittled, punished or withheld health care from px.
Empathy and professional commitment
- professional duty
- altruism
- compassion/caring
Intentional vs. unintentional
intentional: realize what they are doing is inappropriate
unintentional- do not know what they are doing is wrong
affiliative vs distancing
Affiliative: intended to increase intimacy between px and client
Distancing: intended to damage relationship
Assertive approach
- require discussion of incident w/px
- setting boundaries
- responses are respectful and firm
- are best if they are: clear, precise, directive, calm
