Motivation
A need or desire that directs and energizes behavior
Motivation- 2 part phenomenon
- desire to achieve a goal
2. commit to action to accomplish it
Adherence
the degree to which clients follow a treatment regimen
Intrinsic motivation
- I do it bc I like it
- no external reward
Extrinsic motivation
- i do it bc I’m paid to
- external reward
Personal factors affecting motivation
- locus of control
- self-efficacy
- self-esteem
- social support
Locus of control: internal
The perception that one controls own fate
Locus of control: external
The perception that chance or outside forces beyond one’s personal control determine one’s fate
Learned helplessness
- Controllable vs. uncontrollable shock
- escape?
- passivity
Learned helplessness- reformulated theory
-Attributions for the causes of negative events is key: pervasiveness, permanence, personalizaion
Self efficacy
an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behavior necessary to produce specific performance attainments
Self efficacy- influences
- the goals people strive for
- amount of energy expended toward achievement
- likelihood of attaining a given level of performance
Self efficacy
- tends to vary depending on domain of functioning and circumstances surrounding the behavior
- can improve sense of competence by observing others and then learning to complete tasks themselves
Self esteem
- one;s feelings of high or low self-worth
- a person with strong self esteem will feel more in control and more motivated
- you can improve self esteem with awareness/sensitivity
Social support
- include support systems in RX plans
- family support members
- church support
- community programs and resources
