What are the 4 types of punishment

What are the 4 types of imprisonment
Life sentences / indeterminate sentences / determinate sentences / suspended sentences
What is a life sentence
Most serious in the UK. Can be released on license and must follow the rules for the rest of their life, sometimes there are whole life sentences so no release
What is an indeterminate sentence
Offenders are set a minimum time to serve in prison, and have no right to be released. Parole board will discuss to decide — abolished in 2018
What is a determinate sentence
Sentence with a fixed length, If <12 months then usually released half way if >12 months usually half in prison half on license if don’t meet conditions then back to prison
What is a suspended sentence
Given sentence but not straight to prison and if commit another crime then straight there

Retribution / deterrence / pp / reparation / rehab
What are community sentences
For offences too serious for fines and not enough for prison, can have requirements like unpaid work, curfews and drug rehab treatment

Financial penalties for offending , less serious offences, around 15% of magistrates trials use fines

The offence / circumstances of the crime / ability to pay / which court hears the case

When someone is guilty of a minor offence but don’t get a conviction as it was unintentional or court was enough punishment
