Unit 3 (part 2) Parts of the Brain Flashcards
What are the 3 main parts the brain compose of?
The cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem.
What’s the function of the “cerebrum”?
it’s all of the brain qualities that make us humans. (judgment, movement, learning)
What’s the function of the “cerebellum”?
part of the brain for balance
What does the “brainstem” compose of?
It contains medulla, pons, reticular formation
What’s the function of the “medulla”?
It’s breathing (part of the brainstem)
What’s the function of the “pons”?
it’s for sleep (part of the brainstem)
What’s the function of the “reticular formation”?
it’s a central role for consciousness and arousal (part of the brainstem)
What’s the function of the “thalamus”?
It’s part of the brain where all sensory information goes before getting sent to the appropriate lobes (EXCEPT SMELL)
What does the “Limbic System” compose of?
it contains “Amygdala, Hippocampus, Hypothalamus”
What’s the function of the “Amygdala”?
it controls emotion
What’s the function of the “Hippocampus”?
it controls memory
What’s the function of the “Hypothalamus”?
it controls the Endocrine System, Autonomic NS, and Eating (basically hormones, moods/reactions)
What is the “2 eating hypothalamus”?
Ventromedial(very) and Lateral Hypothalamus (less)
What’s “lesion” in psych?
it means destroyed/destroying
What’s a “Cerebral Cortex”?
The thin layer (skin) on top of the cerebrum
What are the “4 lobes of the brain”? And What are they in charge of?
Frontal, Temporal, Parietal, Occipital
movement, hearing, touch/feel, vision
What are the “4 cortex of the 4 lobes of the brain”?
Frontal= motor cortex Parietal= somatosensory cortex Temporal= auditory cortex Occipital= visual cortex
What’s the “prefrontal lobe/cortex” role?
And “Association Area”?
(lobe) in charge of our judgment, reasoning, logic
- combine info (learning, thinking)
Explain “Plasticity”
it’s constantly changing the brain.
It also compensates for brain damages
What’s the “corpus callosum”
It’s the neural fiber that connects & communicates for the 2 hemispheres.
Explain “Split Brain” and who did it?
It’s a surgical procedure where Rogers Sperry removed the corpus callosum so the 2 hemispheres wouldn’t be able to communicate. (treating epilepsy)
Explain “lateralization”
each hemisphere specializes in different skills
What is the “left hemisphere” in charge of?
hemisphere in charge of understanding and speaking
In the brain, who is in charge of speech? And what happens if it’s functioning. (provide the location)
Broca’s area (left frontal lobe)
Broca’s aphasia (can’t speak)
In the brain, who is in charge of understanding/ language comprehension? And what happens if it’s functioning. (provide the location)
Wernicke’s area (left temporal lobe).
Wernecke’s aphasia (can’t understand)
What is the “right hemisphere” in charge of?
hemisphere in charge of creativity, facial recognition
