what is the mechanism of action for prednisone?
- suppresses inflammation and modifies the immune response !
what are some adverse reactions of prednisone?
- osteoporosis !
- fluid and electrolyte imbalances !
- hyperglycemia !
- psychosis !
- thin skin !
- edema/ weight gain !
- increased appetite !
what are some nursing interventions/ teachings for px taking prednisone?
- monitor weight and labs !
- s/s of infection, infection prevention !
- taper dose when discontinued !
- tell px not to discontinue med abruptly
- Take calcium/ Vitamin D and Magnesium !
what are some contraindications of prednisone?
- serious infections like TB
- antibiotic-resistant infections !
-fungal infections !
( treat before beginning medication)

- thyroid
what is the mechanism of action for levothyroxine?
- increases T3 and T4 levels !
what is levothyroxine used for?
hypothyroidism
what is prednisone used for?
- allergic reactions
- rheumatic diseases
- respiratory diseases
what are some adverse reactions of levothyroxine?
s/s of hyperthyroidism !
- tachycardia !
-increased BP !
- hyperglycemia
- chest pain
what are some nursing interventions/ teachings for levothyroxine?
- monitor hr/bp
- follow labs (TSH, T3, T4) !
- take in morning on empty stomach !
- do not stop abruptly
- most will be taken lifelong !
- effects not seen immedately only after several weeks
what are some contraindications of levothyroxine?
- interactions with anticoagulants !
- diabetes med
- history of cardiac disease

Anti-thyroid
