Unit 2 - Topic 6 Flashcards
Urban
What is a GIS?
Geographical information system - stores, analyses and presents geographical information and allowed us to overlay data
For example, seeing an OS map and our EQA data on top of each other
Urban
What does it mean to divide something into quartiles?
Divide a list of numbers into 4 equal groups, 2 above and 2 below the median
Urban
What is reliability?
The extent to which the investigation produced consistent results
Urban
What was the aim of our fieldwork?
To investigate quality of life and measure levels of deprivation
Urban
What was one hypothesis about our enquiry question?
There will/wont be a linear progression of deprivation level from Highgate to Somers town
Urban
What was our sample size?
3 measurements were taken in each location
What were our survey sites?
Highgate, Kentish Town and Somers town
Urban
Give 3 examples of primary data which we gathered
Information about:
Green spaces, level of maintenance of buildings, graffiti/abandoned shops
Urban
Give 3 examples of secondary data which we used
Index of multiple deprivation
Local newspapers
Air pollution data
OS maps
Neighbourhood statistics from census/council
Urban
What type of sampling method did we use in our EQA survey?
Stratified - we did one green park, one busy street and one residential area in each site
Urban
What type of sampling method did we use for land use mapping
Two sides of a street8 s
Urban
What type of sampling method did we use for questionnaire and why9?
Random due to practicality
What type of sampling method did we use when doing field sketch?
Systemic
Give 1 advantage and one disadvantage of random sampling
Reduces bias
Not represtantive in small groups
Give 1 advantage and one disadvantage of stratified sampling
Represtantive
Time consuming as prior research is needed
Give 1 advantage and one disadvantage of systemic sampling
Quick and easy
May miss important data between intervals
Give 4 limits to the accuracy of the investigation
Can’t travel too far ]primary data collection must be in school day
Not enough students to take data
Limited equipment
How did we choose our sites?
Areas with measurable disparities of deprivation, all in the borough of Camden
Give 1 advantage and one disadvantage of qualitative data
Detailed info
Subjective and not easily comparable
Give 1 advantage and one disadvantage of
Quantitative data
Easily comparable and presentable
Limited amount of collectible data and could miss nuances in an areas with a a small sample size
Give 4 land use types we tracked
Residential
Industrial commercial public building ]opnenspace
Transport
Services
Explain how you presented your environmental quality assessment data (4 marks - urban)
Collected data with six categories each with quantitative rankings
Transfer to a radar graph - mark EQA rating as a point on an irregular hexagon
Easily comparable data by comparing size of hexagons for each area - larger indicate higher environmental quality
What way did we present land use mapping ?
Pie charts of how many buildings were used for what in each site
How did we present questionnaire data?
Tables of responses - showing low vs high scorings between sites
How did we present IMD data?
Plotted scores of 3 sites for every IMD measure on a comparative bar charts
Give 3 ways you can evaluate a process of enquiry
Sample size
Frequentlcy of sample
Type of sampling
Time/location/equipment
