unit 2 part 2 (14-18) Flashcards
sleep
natural loss of conciousness
circadian rhythm
natural 24 hour bodily clock
REM sleep
rapid eye moment. stage where dreams often occur. body is paralyzed. periods of rem increase as you sleep. sawtooth waves
alpha waves
slow brain waves of a relaxed but awake state.
hallucinations
sensory experiences occurring without sensory stimulus
hypnagogic sensations
sensation while transitioning to sleep, like falling or floating.
nrem1
nrem2
theta waves, slowing of body functions
nrem3/deep sleep
large, delta waves. hard to wake people from this.
suprachiasmatic nucleus
cell cluster in the hypothalamus, controls circadian rhythm. causes pineal gland to adjust melatonin production.
insomnia
persistent problems in staying or falling asleep
narcolepsy
uncontrollable sleep attacks; lapse directly into REM
sleep apnea
temporary stopping of breathing during sleep. momentary awakenings
night terrors
sleep disorder; high arousal and fear. occurs during NREM-3, within 2-3 hours of sleep. not remembered.
dream
sequence of images, emotions, and thoughts passing through a sleeping persons mind
manifest content
remembered storyline of a dream; freud
latent content
meaning of a dream; freud. often erotic???
rem rebound
rem sleep increases following rem sleep deprivation
psychoactive drugs
substance that alters perception and mood
substance use disorder
disorder; continued substance craving and use
tolerance
needing more substance for desired effect
withdrawal
physical reaction happening when you stop taking an addictive substance
depressants
calm neural activity, slow body function
alcohol use disorder
alcohol addiction
barbiturates
tranquilizer; depresses cns to reduce anxiety. impairs memory and judgement.
opiates
lessens pain; acts like an endorphin.
stimulants
excites neural activity, speeds up body.
nicotine
stimulating + highly addictive psychoactive drug in tobacco
cocaine
powerful+addictive stimulant that temp increases alertness + euphoria
amphetamines
stimulates neural activity; accelerated body functions, energy and mood changes
methamphetamine
stimulates cns, with same symptoms as amphetamines. reduces baseline dopamine levels over time
ecstacy / MDMA
stimulant, mild hallucinogen. euphoria + social intimacy. harms serotonin production.
hallucinogens
psychedelic drugs that distort perception and evoke sensory images in absence of sensory input
near-death experience
altered state of consciousness reported after brush w/ death. similar to drug induced hallucinations.
LSD
very powerful hallucinogen; aka acid
THC
major ingredient in marijuana. mild hallucinogen. also relaxes, may produce euphoric high?
conciousness
individual awareness of life
hyponsis
social interaction where 1 person suggests to another certain thoughts, perceptions and the behavior occurs
posthyponotic suggestion
a suggestion made during hypnosis session to be carried out after subject is no longer hypnotized. controls undesired symptoms and behaviors.
dissociation
split in conciousness
