rapid eye moment. stage where dreams often occur. body is paralyzed. periods of rem increase as you sleep. sawtooth waves
alpha waves
slow brain waves of a relaxed but awake state.
hallucinations
sensory experiences occurring without sensory stimulus
hypnagogic sensations
sensation while transitioning to sleep, like falling or floating.

theta waves, slowing of body functions
nrem3/deep sleep
large, delta waves. hard to wake people from this.
suprachiasmatic nucleus
cell cluster in the hypothalamus, controls circadian rhythm. causes pineal gland to adjust melatonin production.
insomnia
persistent problems in staying or falling asleep
narcolepsy
uncontrollable sleep attacks; lapse directly into REM
sleep apnea
temporary stopping of breathing during sleep. momentary awakenings
night terrors
sleep disorder; high arousal and fear. occurs during NREM-3, within 2-3 hours of sleep. not remembered.
dream
sequence of images, emotions, and thoughts passing through a sleeping persons mind
manifest content
remembered storyline of a dream; freud
