unit 2 - equality and exploitation Flashcards
what are some christians views on equality?
-Jesus seemed to disregard barriers which existed between people because of gender, ethnicity etc. He elevated the position of women in society,
-‘there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus’ (Galatians),
-some Christians believe men and women should have different roles, and that only men can have authority in the church ― ‘Women should remain silent in the church’,
-women are not being able to become priests in the Roman Catholic Church,
what are some moral issues raised by inequality?
-traditional roles can get in the way of people meeting their potential and pursuing their interests,
-is positive discrimination a way to address inequality in society, or does it just unfairly discriminate against other groups in society?
-women continue to face a pay gap, for example, being paid up to 15% less than men for equal work, meaning they are economically disadvantaged,
-any kind of inequality goes against basic human rights as the UDHR states ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and human rights’,
how might the media contribute to exploitation?
-Pornography — unrealistic images and expectations of both men and women and of sex,
-Stereotyping that perpetuates a false view, which leads to exploitation,
-Social media exploits children who are vulnerable to being groomed,
-Women in the media have been shown to be paid unequally to men.
