MT3 = judgement, heaven, hell Flashcards
how many kinds of judgement are there?
there are 2 kinds of judgement
what are the two kinds of judgement?
individual judgement, and final judgement
when does individual judgement occur?
at the end of our lives and will be followed by either eternal union or eternal separation from God
when does final judgement occur?
at the end of the world
what will final judgement mark?
the final stage of God’s recreation of us and the world
what is final judgement associated with?
the second coming of Christ which will bring god’s kingdom as it is in heaven to earth
what is heaven?
heaven is:
-a state of being united with God,
-a realm of divine perfection,
-where the souls of the righteous go in the afterlife,
-where God and Jesus are,
-a state of existence rather than a physical place
what is hell?
hell is:
-rejecting all that God is, unity, truth, goodness, and beauty,
-being truly alone,
-the absence of God and Jesus,
-the rejection of Jesus and his teachings,
-a place of fire and torture where people face the consequences of their sins on earth
what will belief in heaven give Christians?
hope in a better existence beyond death
what does the existence of hell help Christians to understand?
it helps Christians to understand that God will respect the decisions of humans who do not want to be with him in heaven
what does judgement help Christians to understand?
The way we live our lives on earth will impact our lives after death
why might some Christians believe that the belief about judgement is too negative?
because:
-it’s scary to think that God is watching all the time,
-traditional ideas about hell can be very frightening,
-they may think judgement isn’t about the individual, but about their loved ones too,
-the story of the sheep and the goats might suggest that people will be judged for how well they have loved their neighbours and not for how religious the have been,
why might some Christians believe that the belief about judgement is not too negative?
because:
-comforting to know that Jesus loved everyone, and told his followers not to judge others,
-God is the judge, and because he is all-knowing and all-good the judgement will be fair,
-some Christians believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus paid the price for all of humanity’s sins,
-heaven is a life after death with no pain or suffering, and this prospect is comforting to Christians
what are the 7 last things?
-individual judgement
-final judgement
-heaven
-hell
-purgatory
-new heaven
-new earth
what are the catholic teachings about life after death?
-that when people die those pure in spirit go to heaven
-those with unforgiven sins will go to purgatory to be purified,
-those in a state of mortal sin will go to hell
-on the last day god will create a new heaven and a new earth and that is where those in heaven and purgatory will go on to live forever
