-sexism = women not having the same opportunities as men.
-prejudice = women are still judged on the way they look and dress.
-glass ceiling = women can see the top jobs but can’t break through the glass ceiling to get them.
what does the catholic religious viewpoint say about gender roles?
-some would argue that gender roles do belong in a society as they do not necessarily have to be negative or stereotypical.
-and it allows people to know where they stand and gives everyone a job to do.
-others may argue that men and women should have a choice to their roles, and that it shouldn’t be based on gender.
-and that gender roles are old fashioned and sexist
what is the possible impact of having different gender roles in society?
-women might never reach the same level as men in the workplace.
-they could encourage sexism, prejudice, and discrimination.
-they could give everyone a job to do in society.
-they could encourage gender violence.
-it could lead to people thinking that they are superior to others based on their gender.
should a person who is true to their religion treat men and women equally? for yes:
-the story of Genesis could be seen as positive for gender equality as both men and women were created on the last day in the image of God.
-Jesus had friendships with women which were very important such as Mary Magdalene who was the first woman to see Jesus after he had been resurrected.
-women deserve an equal role in the Church because they have the qualities needed to play an important part in the Church.
should a person who is true to their religion treat men and women equally? for no:
-women are not able to reach the same level as males in Christianity, for example women can’t become priests in the roman catholic church.
-the story of Adam and Eve could be seen as negative for gender equality as Eve is seen as the Temptress who causes the fall of mankind.
-In Timothy’s quote women are meant to be submissive in Church, ‘i do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet.’
