Palliative Care
Affirms life and regards death as a normal process.
Hospice Care
Care designed to give supportive care to people in the final stages of terminal illness and focus on comfort and quality of care.
Algor Mortis
Post Morten cooling
Body temp falls gradually after death
Rigor Mortis
Muscular rigidity-as a result of conversion of glycogen to lactic acid.
A few hours following death - 24hr after
Begins at the jaw, moving down the body
The body remains stiff and rigid for up to 6 hours
Livor Mortis
Reddish/purple discoloration that develops in the department parts of a decreased body.
Blood begins to flow passively into dependent parts
Begins about 30 mins following death and is fully developed after about 6 hours.
Putrefaction
Decomposition of a deceased body by bacteria
The rate depends on heat and moisture.
Coolness and dryness delay the process.
Embalming
Is the introduction of a chemical preservative which destroys bacteria and prevents the rapid decomposition of tissue.
Usually effective for 1-2 days.
