unit 10 lesson 3 Flashcards
commensalism
a relationship in which one species benefits from another species and that species is neither harmed nor helped
competition
an interaction in which different species attempt to use the same resource
mutualism
a close relationship in which two different species provide a benefit to each other
parasite
an organism that lives in or on another organism and feeds off that organism
parasitism
the relationship between a parasite and its host
predation
a relationship in which one organism eats another organism
symbiosis
a relationship in which two organisms live in close association with each other
Indirect Competition
One species of insect might eat a plant during the day, while another species eats the plant at night. Plants that flower at the same time might compete for pollinators. Insects that eat food crops are in direct competition with humans, who will also eventually eat the food crop.
