Q

A lab is a place for scientific?

A

A lab is a place for scientific study. Studies can take place anywhere, but in a lab things can be controlled and studied in great detail. Scientists use labs to design and carry out their own experiments without distractions or other factors to alter the results of their experiments.

Q

Charles Goodyear invented

A

A man named Charles Goodyear had been trying to invent a strong rubber from natural rubber. His experiments kept failing, until one day the rubber was accidentally left on a hot stove in the laboratory. This turned the rubber into a very strong and useful material. This invention became known as vulcanized rubber, and it is now used to make tires, shoes, and even bowling balls!

Q

No food or drink is allowed in the lab.

A

If chemicals come in contact with food or drink, they could poison them! Even gum can pick up chemicals or fumes in the air, so it is best to dispose of every type of food or drink before entering the lab.

Q

No horseplay is allowed in the lab.

A

This includes playing around with the equipment or pushing or shoving. This rule is for everyone’s safety. If students are rough and noisy in the lab or run around with sharp knives and glass, someone will probably get hurt.

Q

Always clean up.

A

A clean lab is a safe lab. Each new group of students should be able to begin their experiments with a clean area. All equipment should be put away in the proper location when projects are finished. Any chemicals or liquids must be placed in properly labeled containers. A few minutes of cleaning will make the next lab visit both safer and easier to conduct experiments.

Q

The tools in the lab are expensive because

A

A laboratory is a place that must be treated with great respect. Remember, there is a lot of expensive equipment in a lab. The tools in a science lab are usually very expensive because they are made of many small parts and expensive pieces, such as curved glass, sensitive measuring instruments, and rare chemicals. A $1,000 microscope can easily break if it gets knocked to the floor, and replacing something that expensive would be difficult.
