Lesson 8 - Experiments Flashcards
Experiment
a test, trial, or procedure carried out for the purpose of testing a hypothesis
Hypothesis
an educated guess about the result of an experiment
Controlled experiment
an experiment in which all factors are kept the same, except the one to be tested (For example, the temperature, water, sunlight, and soil are all the same for each plant in a singular experiment.)
Factor
part of an experiment that can affect other parts of the experiment (Soil, wind, water, and sunlight are all factors in the previous plant experiment.)
Variable
one factor of the experiment that is changed in order to observe what happens (If one plant is placed in the dark, the variable is the lack of sunlight on that one plant.)
Control group
the subjects in the experiment that have all of the exact same factors (In Marcos’ experiment, all the plants that are in the sunlight make up the control group.)
Experimental group
the subject or subjects that have the variable factor (the plants in the dark)
average
a value that shows a typical or normal result of an experiment
conclusion
a reasoned judgment based on collected data
variable
one factor of the experiment that is changed in order to observe what happens.
