Ecosystem Factors Flashcards
abiotic
nonliving
what are some abiotic factors
Abiotic factors can include air, water, rocks, sand, light, and temperature.
biotic
living
what are some biotic factors
Biotic factors include all members of the six kingdoms (archaea, bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals), both dead and alive.
Ecosystems need five basic things for organisms to survive:
1 –energy (usually from the Sun so plants and algae can perform photosynthesis)
2 –mineral nutrients (needed by cells to perform functions)
3 –oxygen (needed by cells to survive)
4 –water
5 –living organisms
energy
Energy is fuel for living things
What five things do ecosystems need?
living organisms energy oxygen water mineral nutrients
energy
either the Sun or a source of food in ecosystems
nutrients
elements and minerals needed by cells to function
water
needed in its fresh form by organisms
oxygen
a gas found in the air or dissolved in water that is needed for organisms to survive
organisms
living and once-living things in an ecosystem
Plant roots take up the nutrients from the air.
False; Plant roots take up the nutrients from the soil.
The beginning source of energy for most ecosystems is plants.
False; The beginning source of energy for most ecosystems is the Sun.
Fresh water makes up 97% of Earth’s water.
False; Salt water makes up 97% of Earth’s water.
