UNIT 1: flexor muscles of arm/forearm Flashcards
What are the three flexor muscles of the arm?
- biceps brachii
- brachialis
- coracobrachialis
how is the biceps brachii organised and where does it insert?
- long head - arises from supraglenoid tubercle
- short head - arises from coracoid process
inserts on radial tuberosity into bicipital aponeurosis
what movements does the biceps brachii produce?
- flexor of elbow joint when forearm supinated
- supinates forearm when in pronation
BRACHIALIS:
1) Where is it found?
2) where does it insert?
3) what movement does it produce?
1) posterior to biceps
2) ulnar tuberosity
3) flexes elbow joint in all positions
CORACOBRACHIALIS:
1) Where does it insert?
2) what movement does it produce?
1) humerus
2) flexion/ adduction of shoulder joint
BRACHORADIALIS:
1) Where does it insert?
2) what movement does it produce?
1) distal radius
2) flexor of elbow
how are flexor muscles of the forearm arranged?
three layers: superficial/ intermediate/ deep
which muscles form the superficial layer?
- palmaris longus
- pronator teres
- flexor carpi radialis
- flexor carpi ulnaris
What movements do the muscles of the superficial produce?
PL: flexes hand at wrist/ flexes palmar aponeurosis
PT: pronates/ flexes forearm
FCR: flexes/ abducts the hand
FCU: flexes/ adducts the hand
what muscle is in the intermediate layer and what movements does it produce?
flexor digitorum superficialis: flexes wrist joint/ proximal phalanges at metacarpophalangeal joints and proximal interphalangeal joint of middle 4 joints
what muscles form the deep layer?
- flexor digitorum profundus
- flexor pollicis longus
- pronator quadratus
what movements do the muscles of the deep layer produce?
FDP: flexes wrist joint/ distal interphalangeal joints
FPL: flexes wrist/ metacarpohalangeal & interphalangeal joints
PQ: pronates forearm and helps interosseous membrane bind radius to ulna
What are the borders of the cubital fossa?
superior: line between epicondyle
medial: lateral border of pronator teres
lateral: medial border of brachioradialis
What are the contents of the cubital fossa?
mnemonic
(Really need beer to be at my nicest)
- radial nerve
- biceps tendon
- brachial artery
- median nerve
