Triangles of the Neck + Vasculature/ Cervical Plexus Flashcards
What muscles are found in the anterior triangle?
supra + infrahyoid muscles
What nerves are found in the anterior triangle?
cranial nerves VII, IX, X, XI, XII
What vessels are found in the anterior triangle?
bifurcation of the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein
What triangles is the anterior triangle subdivided into?
- carotid
- submental
- submandibular
- muscular
Give the borders of the posterior triangle
Anterior: posterior border of SCM
Posterior: anterior border of trapezius
Inferior: middle 1/3 of clavicle
What muscles are found in the posterior triangle?
omohyoid, vertebral muscles (splenius capitis, levator scapulae, scalenes)
What nerves are found in the posterior triangle?
accessory nerve
cervical plexus - phrenic nerve
trunks of brachial plexus
Give the borders of the carotid triangle (S/I/L)
- S: posterior belly of digastric
- I: superior belly of omohyoid
- L:medial border of SCM
What is found in the carotid triangle?
- carotid sheath
- hypoglossal nerve
What is the clinical relevance of the carotid triangle?
it is superficial so can be easily accessed in surgery
it contains sinus baroreceptors
Give the borders of the submental triangle
- M: midline of beck
- L: anterior belly of digastric
- I: hyoid bone
What is found in the submental triangle?
submental lymph nodes
